ABOUT GICLÉE PRINTING

Although the process bears a fancy sounding French name, Giclée (zhee-CLAY) printing is simply a form of large format inkjet printing utilizing waterproof ink. The process is especially useful for digital artists since there is no original hard copy of the art in that genre.

Giclée prints can be made on a wide variety of surfaces including canvas, vinyl, watercolor paper and transparent acetate. The quality of the process is superior to traditional offset lithography. Images printed in this process have a far higher resolution than those produced by standard printing processes and the colors are more vivid and last far longer than commercially produced lithographs. Since the printers can print on media from rolls, it is possible on the right printer to print billboard size images.

The process employs 6 different color inks and in some cases 2 blacks. Although the industry claims that prints made by the Giclée process can last over 35 years without color degradation if handled properly, it must be stated that the tests to reach this concludion were only simulated and do not represent actual prints that have been around for 35 years.

While it is possible for printers to produce Giclées in almost any size on canvas, most printers only carry stretchers in the most common sizes such as 16" x 20", 18" x 24", 24" x 30" and so on. Today there exists a market in the art world for Giclée prints much like those for other types of prints such as lithographs, etchings and woodcuts.

What we offer our customers is ON DEMAND Giclée printing, which means that we produce the print expressly for our customers. Therefore, the whole procedure can take up to 3 weeks to produce, from the taking of digitally correct photographs, to color proofing, color correcting and printing. For this reason we require that all purchases be paid for in advance with absolutely NO RETURNS or REFUNDS.
